To prevent bacterial growth water based lubricants almost universally contain preservatives such as parabens esters, phenoxyethanol or sodium benzoate. The glycols used are propylene glycol and glycerol. They can be used alone or in combination. Some “warming lubricants” contain very high levels of propylene glycol.
